How to Choose a Wedding DJ

What actually matters, what doesn't, and how to tell a pro from a playlist.

Choosing a wedding DJ can feel strangely hard. Every DJ says they'll "keep the dance floor packed," every website has a photo of people with their hands in the air (ours included), and prices vary wildly. We've been DJing weddings in South Florida since 1997, so we're obviously not neutral. But this guide is meant to help you choose well, whoever you hire.

1. Decide what you want the night to feel like

Before you talk to a single DJ, talk to each other. Do you want a nightclub-style dance party? A classy evening with dinner jazz and a short, sweet dance floor? A multicultural celebration that moves from salsa to hip-hop? A DJ who's perfect for one may be wrong for another. Write down three words that describe your ideal reception and use them in every conversation.

2. Read reviews, especially the details

Star ratings are a starting point, but the text tells you more. Look for:

  • Specifics about the dance floor. "The floor was packed all night" from multiple couples is a good sign.
  • Comments on professionalism. Words like "easy to work with," "on time," "great advice."
  • MC skills. Did guests notice the announcements were clear and well-timed?
  • Reviews from venues and planners. Vendors see dozens of DJs. When a venue recommends someone, it means a lot.
  • Guest reviews. When a wedding guest bothers to review the DJ, they really made an impression.

Read reviews on more than one site. Our own are on The Knot and WeddingWire.

3. Experience matters, but the right kind

Years in business tell you a DJ has survived, which in the wedding industry isn't easy. But ask about wedding experience specifically. Club and party DJs are skilled, but weddings demand timeline management, MC work, coordination with other vendors, and the ability to keep three generations happy. Ask how many weddings they've done and at what kinds of venues.

4. Pay attention to the MC

Many couples focus entirely on music and forget the DJ will also be holding the microphone all night. Ask how they handle introductions, toasts and transitions. Ask for an example of how they'd introduce your wedding party. A great MC is warm, clear and brief. Read more on what a good wedding MC does.

5. Ask how they plan the music

Good answers involve collaboration: your must-play list, your do-not-play list, a conversation about your crowd, and the DJ's expertise filling in the rest. Red flags include a DJ who wants you to choose every song (that's a playlist, not a DJ) or one who won't take any input at all. Our questions to ask your wedding DJ list covers this in detail.

6. Understand the pricing

Wedding DJ pricing varies with the day of the week, hours, equipment, lighting and add-ons. What matters is knowing exactly what you're paying for. Ask:

  • Is the price flat, or by the hour?
  • What happens if the party runs late? Are there overtime fees?
  • What's included (MC, ceremony sound, lighting, microphones)?
  • What are the deposit and payment terms?

We publish our pricing (flat-rate, unlimited time, $800 Sunday, $1,000 Friday, $1,200 Saturday), and our guide to Miami wedding DJ costs explains what drives prices up or down anywhere.

7. Check insurance

This one is easy to overlook. Many South Florida venues, including hotels, clubs and municipal spaces, require vendors to carry liability insurance and send a certificate of insurance (COI) before the event. A DJ without insurance may simply not be allowed in. Ask every DJ whether they're insured and can provide a COI to your venue. (We are, and we can.)

8. Look at the equipment, briefly

You don't need to become an audio expert, but ask whether the DJ uses professional-grade equipment, whether they have backup gear, and whether they provide wireless microphones for toasts. If your ceremony is outdoors, ask how they handle wind; our beach wedding sound tips explain why it matters.

9. Meet or talk before you book

A phone call or video chat tells you a lot. Are they listening to you or reciting a sales pitch? Do they ask about your crowd, your venue and your timeline? Do you like them? You'll spend a lot of your wedding day with this person within earshot. Personality fit is real.

10. Book early

Popular dates, especially Saturdays in peak season, book months in advance. Once you have a venue and date, start your DJ search.
